Although They Look Like Wood, Laminate Floors Are Cheaper
Laminate flooring is among the most popular of the modern, engineered flooring solutions. The main advantage of a laminate floor is that it looks like a natural floor but it costs a great deal less. A laminate floor can be made to closely approximate a natural hardwood floor, but although they look almost exactly like wood, laminate floors are significantly cheaper. In fact, a laminate floor can be made to look like a granite floor too, or other natural surfaces.
To closely approximate wood, laminate floors rely on top quality photographs of wood. The high-tech, melamine top layer of a laminate floor is imprinted with these photographs to closely resemble a real wood grain. This top layer is extremely dense and resistant to scratching, scuffing and damage. It is bonded to a hard fibre backing for a very stable walking surface. This fibre backing is in turn bonded to a balancing backing. Underneath this engineered laminate, padding can be added; this is the bottom layer that rests on the underlying surface. This extra padding makes for a more comfortable, absorbent and quieter walking floor.
One of the biggest advantages of laminate flooring is that it can be installed on top of most types of existing floors, saving you both time and money. On top of this, it is also easy to install and it is extremely water-resistant if it had been properly installed and sealed along the edges using a silicon sealant. Laminates are extremely durable and can look beautiful for years with relatively little maintenance. Easily remove dirt with a mop and an ammonia-based floor cleaner – it is not necessary to wax or polish a laminate floor.
