Bamboo Flooring
Bamboo Flooring – The Impressive Choice
Now there is a way to be both stylish and friendly to the environment – by
installing bamboo flooring in your home. Bamboo is actually
a very hard grass that can be engineered into planks to make durable, beautiful
flooring that's also environmentally friendly. Why environmentally friendly?
Because bamboo will renew itself from the same rootstalk over and over
again, ensuring that no vegetation is permanently destroyed. While it is
certainly a very worthy cause, this might not be enough to convince everybody,
so consider the aesthetic appeal of bamboo flooring. It
looks very similar to wooden floors, adding that same sense of warmth and
sophistication to a room, at a much more affordable rate.
Bamboo flooring is a versatile flooring type that works
well with just about any décor – from a beach house to a sophisticated
urban loft. Clarity and colour consistency are signs of good quality bamboo
that, with the proper maintenance, will last for generations. Bamboo is
available in a light, natural colour and warm "caramelised" tones.
The caramelised tone results from heating the sugar in the fibres during
manufacturing. Bamboo can also be stained in colours such as cherry, espresso,
walnut, and charcoal.
Apart from its obvious aesthetic appeal, bamboo is also a very practical flooring solution. Both the installation and the maintenance of this flooring type are extremely easy. Bamboo is installed just like a traditional tongue and groove solid hardwood floor. Depending on the product, it can be nailed, stapled, glued to concrete, or installed as a floating floor with a self-locking system requiring no adhesive. The best advice is to look for bamboo flooring with a super-tough, water-based and solvent free finish containing aluminium oxide and scratch-resistant topcoats. Then simply, as with any quality hardwood, vacuum or sweep regularly and occasionally wipe with a manufacturer-recommended hardwood floor cleaner.
Bamboo flooring can be installed in virtually any room of your home, above or below ground, over wood, or existing vinyl flooring. It is not recommended, however, that bamboo flooring be installed in wet locations such as bathrooms or washrooms, as extended exposure to moisture may cause warping or swelling.
