Cork Floors
Cork Floors Are Earth Friendly And Durable
Cork floors have proven ideal in many applications and have garnered a loyal following for very good reasons. The most important is probably that a cork floor is beautiful, imparting a warm, earthy ambience. Another notable advantage is that a cork floor is particularly comfortable to walk on. There are millions of air bubbles trapped in the cork cells, providing just that little bit of cushioning underfoot that makes it more comfortable to stand and walk on, especially if you spend a lot of time on your feet.
Cork floors are very popular in public places like libraries, churches and courthouses and the reasons are manifold. Firstly, the cork's sound insulation properties make for a particularly quiet-walking floor that absorbs noise and vibrations to maintain a restful atmosphere. At the same time, it offers superior temperature insulation too. This is also why cork flooring is often preferred in the presence of noisy machinery. Secondly, it is extremely hard-wearing and can last for a long time if cared for.
Thirdly, unlike many other types of flooring, a cork floor can easily be repaired where it has sustained damage, without having to resurface the entire floor. Lastly, a natural substance called Suberin is present in the cork. This waxy substance repels bugs, mites, termites and mould and prevents the cork from rotting, even when wet or damp. It is also worth noting that cork is earth friendly, because cork tree forests are not cut down to harvest the cork. Instead, the cork is in the trees' bark, which is harvested every nine years and allowed to regrow, leaving the forest intact.
